Miranshah Fort, NWF 1939
Because the fort was subject to continual intermittant sniper fire the aircraft were started up inside the fort and at the last minute the gates were opened and the aircraft took off. Upon return the aircraft had to land outside and quickly taxi upto the gates which were opened just in time for them to enter and then closed again to keep out any natives with bad intentions. The aircraft at the right hand side of the picture is a Westland Wapiti and was one of the aircraft with which the Indian Air Force was founded with when 27 squadron transfered to Risalpur and became the flying training school for the first intake to the newly formed IAF.
